What is the lockdown in Mallorca?

You might have heard various rumours about the conditions of the lock down in Mallorca, right now things are extremely good in respect of virus numbers in Mallorca and to ensure the numbers stay as low as possible, the local Government continues with some restrictions.

If you are visiting the island maybe for Easter, bars and restaraunts can open at the moment but with restrictions on numbers and times, essentially, all terraces and interiors must be closed by 5:00pm.  After this time, food can still be served but only for take away.

We still have a curfew in place starting at 10:00pm and finishing at 6:00am, so the streets are quiet between this times.

Restrictions apply for social gatherings, with a maximum of 6 people able to meet up from 2 households.

Latest news on partial lock-down in Mallorca

Latest covid infections in Mallorca - positive news on significant reductions

Recent statistics for Covid-19 in the Balearics show a very positive trend with each recent day being lower in new infections and unfortunate deaths.

For the 24 hours previous to 2nd October, there has been only 89 new infections recorded and 5 deaths, 4 of which were in a particular old persons home that has been very badly hit by the virus.  Over the last 10 days, each day the number of new infections has fallen with a total of 14,291 people on the island infected from the start of the year and a sad 311 total deaths.

Is Santa Ponsa in Lockdown?

Lots of people are asking about the local state of play, for instance, is Santa Ponsa locked down because of Coronavirus, are restaurants open in Palmanova at the moment, can I go the beach, are supermarkets open, can I walk in the street etc?

The facts are this, nearly all bars and restaurants that would normally be open serving locals and residents are open and generally busy. Its true that many classical tourist bars and eateries are closed as their customers are not here in sufficient numbers due to problems with quarantine when they return home, but those that come are enjoying a safe, quiet and more gentle way of holidaying.  Take a look at our recent video here https://www.imperial-properties.com/en/ImperialPropertiesBlog?p=santa-ponsa-in-september to see how wonderful and tranquil the area is at the moment.

Mask have to worn at all times in public, except on beaches and certain other areas, but in reality everyone is wearing a mask all the time.  No smoking is allowed in public at any time.

Certain small areas of Palma are currently under tighter restrictions, but in reality, very very few tourists would ever visit these areas, so essentially Palma is fully open to trade just the same as Santa Ponsa.

Lockdown in Palma

 

Today the balearic government started the first of local lockdowns affecting the areas of Son Gotleu, Can Capes, la Soledat Nord and parte de Son Canals.  These 4 areas of Palma de Mallorca are the only areas affected by the restrictions meaning that locals must stay within their own areas and within certain hours. 

Various rumours were circulating last week that all of Palm is in lockdown, this is not true, the local government now has the ability to issue specific lockdown orders for barios, areas or towns, their intention is to target the areas that need most control whilst still allowing for free trade and life in the rest of the areas.

Coronavirus / covid-19 in Mallorca - update 4th September 2020

Things are operating close to normal at the moment here, most bars and eateries are open and generally busy, those specifically targeting the foreign, UK and German,  markets are quiet as many of their clients have now returned to their home countries with quarantine periods in mind.

In our region, there are no current restrictions regarding lock down, mask need to be worn at all times unless you are eating or drinking, social distancing needs to be observed in all areas and beaches are now closed from 9 pm until 9am in the morning, but everyone is chilled, the weather is great and most importantly, the admission and fatality rates on the island is currently very low.

Santa Ponsa is buzzing

As tourists now fly easily into Mallorca, Santa Ponsa is getting busy and getting ready for the delayed 2020 season.   Its true that you must wear face masks in the street at all times, but this small inconvenience certainly hasn't stopped our tourist friends from hitting the beaches and making hay while the sun shines and shine it certainly has, with temperatures hovering around 30 every day.

First tourists arrive in Palma airport since lockdown

Today sees the first wave of foreign tourists arriving into Mallorca by air. An initial "test" program of around 10,000 tourists, many German, will arrive in the following days as hotels gradually reopen from the lockdown due to coronavirus or covid19.

Weather in Mallorca is stunning to welcome the tourists, mid to upper 20's with full sun and blue skies and seas.

Santa Ponsa beaches open now in Coronavirus shutdown 

The whole of Calvia, Santa Ponsa, Palmanova and surrounding areas of South West Mallorca breathed a huge lungfull of fresh air as the beaches reopen for general use during the phase 2 of the covid-19 lockdown.  Residents took advantage of the wonderful weather and warm breezes from the sea and rested for the forthcoming week in Mallorca on beaches in Santa Ponsa, Palmanova and Magaluf.

Prime minister Pedro Sánchez announces this afternoon very important news regarding holidays in Mallorca?

This Saturday Spanish prime minister announced that from the middle of June internal tourism will resume and from start of July tourism from other countries will restart.  He has asked that all tourism operators and providers, hotels and restaurants prepare for the reopening..

 

Incredible news today regarding covid-19 in Mallorca

This Saturday no deaths have occured in the whole of the Balearics, Mallorca, Menorca or Ibiza.

Just as important, there were only 2 cases of new infection, this after two weeks of phase one being in place with many people circulating more or less normally.  Great news on coronvirus from Santa Ponsa and the whole of Mallorca.

Flights to Mallorca to resume in July?

Ryanair boss Micheal O´Leary discussed today on GMTV UK television, opening of routes to Mallorca in July.  The controversial hand of Ryanair claims that no quarantine restrictions will apply and with the exception of high infection centres like Madrid and Barcelona, flights will be back as normal. 

 

Here in Santa Ponsa, under phase one of the derestrictions, life is returning to some form of normality with the streets very busy and temperatures this week expected to hit high twenties with a week of wonderful early summer weather.

New infections in the balearic islands remain almost non existent (low single figures daily) and thankfully deaths from the Covid Virus in Mallorca have almost ceased.

Phase 1 in Mallorca in full effect

Santa Ponsa in phase one of descalation is in full effect, the main street where our office sits is buzzing, bars and cafes are open and although at 50% occupancy, vibrant and busy.

While life is by no means back to normal, the overall feeling and atmosphere is a world away from confinement, any developements will be posted daily.

The whole island of Mallorca waits with anticipation of the start of phase 1

Everyone is waiting with great excitement for the start of phase 1 of the de-escalation of the lockdown on Monday 11th May 2020.

Finally we can reopen the office for appointments, make visits with client who are here and list new properties in the flesh.

Bars and cafes can open terraces with limited amounts of clients, but coffees will be flowing freely in Santa Ponsa and surrounding towns like Palma Nova, Calvia, Costa de la Calma, Portal Nous and Port Adriano/El Toro.

All of this requires the rubber stamp from the central government, but with the Balearics and Mallorca in particular being so well protected during the crisis so far, it is widely expected that the islands will be included in the first round of releases into phase 1.

Flying to Mallorca during the coronovirus Covid lock down

At the moment, the most popular question we have from our extensive client base, is "when can I fly to Mallorca during the Covind quarrantine?"  Until today we have had no clear answer for this question.  However, the local press reports today that next week a decision will be made as to when the opening of non-essential flights to Mallorca in lock down will resume, so we are all waiting with great anticipation.

Remember at the moments, if you are resident in Mallorca, there are daily flights from Barcelona and Madrid to Palma de Mallorca airport (PMI) allowing repatriation of residents as well as urgent travel from and to the mainland.

Santa Ponsa shows signs of waking up!

So today we processed another successful sale in the notary close to our head office in Santa Ponsa and therefore have been out and about on the streets. 

There are definite signs of business owners preparing to open, various bars and terraces are being cleaned today and a much more positive community was on show, all smiles and greetings, such a great thing to see. 

Under the phasing plan, bars or eateries with terraces can open with reduced capacity from May 11th, so lets all look forward to then when life can begin to get back to some normality.

The fantastic weather we have at the moment is adding to general feeling of positivity, long may it remain and every stay safe.

Coronovirus Covid-19 news in Mallorca - Last night in a speech live from the Moncloa (Spanish Government buildings) Pedro Sanchez detailed a very clear and exciting plan for the end of the lock down and a return to "the new normality"

In a series of 4 phases each individual autonomous community of Spain will allow progressively more movement, interaction and opening of public spaces including bars and eateries and travel.

Each phase will last 2 weeks with a view to the whole of the country being back to full summer power near the end of June.

The most interesting detail for everyone interested in the Balearics, and Mallorca in particular the Calvia and South West region, is that the regions with the best statistical picture of the cornovirus impact will have autonomy to progress further and faster throughout the stages. 

This is key for Santa Ponsa and the surrounding areas such as Puerto Andratx and the whole Calvia region as Mallorca has all but fulfilled the 5 key indicators of the W.H.O. that determine that the virus is totally under control.

Critical admission target passed in Mallorca

In what is seen as a key indicator of breaking the back of the virus in Mallorca, today sees five consecutive days without a single admission to ICU in any of the Balearic hospitals.

This metric displays a clear indicator that the effect of the virus is in remission on the island of Mallorca.

Balearic islands in good position to be able to exit lockdown early along with other parts of the World

 According to the stringent 5 point plan put in place by central government and the WHO, the balearics are very close to be able to meet all 5 points specified to start reducing the effects of lockdown.

This weekend saw the first day of children being able to enjoy the beautiful weather we had on Sunday and signs looks very good for further reductions in restrictions around the Santa Ponsa, Calvia and general South West of the island of Mallorca.

May 2nd sees adults allowed out to exercise for short periods in Mallorca as well.

Austria has has begun a gradual relaxation of the rules along with bars and food stops expected to open mid May, Italy has also laid out a plan for relaxing its strict regime in the coming weeks.

Discussions take place today regarding the phasing of deristrictions 

The central government of Spain along with the heads of the government of Balearics are today discussing the phasing approach of lifting the restrictions of lockdown due to the covid19 Cornovirus epidemic.

As the island of Mallorca and the Balearics in general have suffered very little effect in relation the rest of Spain, discussions are taking place to end the lockdown in different stages and levels depending on the region.

Sanchez discusses "horizon can be seen to de-escalate the lockdown"

With many caveats, Pedro Sanchez yesterday presented a discussion about the plans to gradually remove the lock down conditions in Spain and therefore Mallorca and the county of Calvia.

As well as allowing children to circulate more freely with their parents after 26th April, the prime minister also discussed that the end is in sight and the measures that will be in place will ensure that there cannot be another rise in infections in the future.

Wildlife takes adavantage of the lock down in Mallorca 

In a period of intense worldwide misery and stress, for friday a little lighter news.  Take a look at the video below of dolphins frolicking in the water just meters of the quay in the sporting port at Barcelona.

 

As I sit in the moring sun writing this article, I can also see a pair of birds of prey circling over my house having extended their hunting grounds from the hills and golf course towards Santa Ponsa town centre, fascinating to watch these majestic birds circling at a great height watching the ground intently for signs of breakfast!

A key milestone was passed on Mallorca today in relation to the effect of Coronovirus in Mallorca, more people were declared cured than the number diagnosed with the virus.  This is seen as another key indicator that the worst is passsed and the infectious phase of the outbreak it receeding or indeed over.

More positive news on infection numbers across the baleares

Whilst the islands have now suffered a total of  125 tragic deaths and 1,606 total infections, this still indicates that the back is broken of the infection and light is visible at the end of the tunnel.  This is largely due to the fantastic efforts of all public services on the island ensuring the lock down is still firmly policed and controlled.   Travel without justifiable reason is still banned, if you are venturing out and about this week, make sure you have all of your documents in place and valid as well as a documented reason to travel.

The harshest conditions of the lockdown have now been lifted and certain work can take place, so suddenly yesterday morning, the island sprang a little back to life, I have never seen such joy at the sight of a traffic jam before!

Residents can clearly feel that the atmosphere is changing for the better, the lock down is still very much in place (I stopped twice again last night on a trip to the vets) but there is a spring in the step and everyone is looking forward to some normality come summer.

Provisional proposals to return to normality, after April 26th

A number of government officials both in Madrid and Mallorca are discussing the proposition to lift quarranting restrictions after the current lock down ends on April 28th 2020.

The Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, assured this Wednesday that citizens will be able to regain "their normal life" from next April 26, although the return to the "occupation of streets and squares" will be carried out "with clear instruction" to be transmitted by Pedro Sanchez.

Balearic islands now confirmed as having the lowest rate of increase of all the spanish regions

With a rate of new infections at nearly  minus 10 percent each day the balearic islands have been confirmed as the lowest growth region of all of the Spanish autonomous regions.   

Coupled with the very low infection rate per person of 0.63, that is for every infectious person on the island, statistically they will infect significantly less than one person, these numbers indicate a very postive trend for the containment of covid 19 in Mallorca.

There are discussions taking place that the island could be used as a test bed for early easing of the quarantine restrictions, but this is yet to be confirmed, as soon as this is official, we will update the page accordingly

Spain records consistent drop in infections and deaths / has the virus been broken?

Today sees the lowest increase in infections and deaths since 24th March and  the highest level of patients recorded as cured.  In the balearics, the new infections rose by only 27 on Sunday.

In general the excellent work of the local police and civil guard of Calvia means that the streets of Santa Ponsa, Palma nova and surrounding south west of Mallorca are very quiet with only essential work and trips taking place.  the Police continue to close many main junctions to ensure that the public remain at home and stay safe.

Can I buy or sell my property during the lock down in Mallorca? 

In the last two working days Imperial Properties have completed two purchase - sales in two seperate notaries in Calvia region.  Both were classes as urgent by the notaries due to compelling circumstances for either the buyer or seller in each case.  Therefore the answer is yes, deals can complete during the quarantine if classed urgent by the notary concerned.

Mallorca shows more positive signs of infection weakening

There’s been a vast improvement in the coronavirus figures in the Balearics in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health.

Another 14 people have been infected with Covid-19, the lowest number for weeks, taking the total to 1,271.

There were 2 deaths on Saturday which is also a big reduction and takes the total number of fatalities to 71. 114 patients were admitted to the ICU.

There was also good news concerning the amount of people who’ve been discharged and no longer have any signs of coronavirus with numbers increasing from 239 on Friday to 422 on Saturday. The Ministry of Health tweeted the latest coronavirus figures for Spain.

All quiet on the western Mallorca front!

A certain peace has decendend upon Santa Ponsa and the area surrounding Calviá in general.  Traffic is almost non existent and general noise of every day life has all but ceased.  The sound of birdsong and wind in trees has overtaken the region and in many respects it is a really nice interlude from the norm.

It feels as if the whole region is sitting lying in wait for the wrappers to come off the quarantine and the season to start in earnest.  Infection and tragically death numbers still continue to rise although more slowly each day and the government are discussing the gradual easing of the restrictions when the statistics show the time is right.

Mallorca shows signs of peak infection passed

Analysis of the infection rates from last week show that possibly the peak of infections on the balearics may have passed. Sunday to Monday their was an increase of 20%, Monday to Tuesday 19%, Tuesday to wednesday 17%, wednesday to Thursday 14%, Friday to Saturday 14% and Saturday to Sunday 11%.

Possible relaxation of lock down rules

Interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska has praised the reaction of all Spanish citizens to the harsh lock down regime and has suggested that at then end of the current period of quarantine on April 12th some restrictions could be reduced. At this moment their is no clarity as to what the lifting of the restrictions could be, but let us hope that by this time the acceleration of the growth of infections and associated deaths will have leveled out due to the quarantine taking effect.

Latest numbers for the balearics in total are 562 infections with 22 deaths, this remains amongst the lowest of all regions in Spain, once again our thanks to out to the outstanding efforts of the health service on the island as they continue to battle this worldwide virus in Mallorca.

Walking dogs during the coronavirus outbreak in Mallorca

As trivial as it seems in this worldwide crisis, many people on the streets here in the Santa Ponsa and greater south West region of Mallorca are concerned about exactly what the lock down rules imposed by Madrid allow with respect to dog walking. The rules are quite clear that you can walk alone with with your dog for a minimum amount of required excercise for them (not you!!). You Must carry your ID, the dogs passport (or photos of?), bags for waste collection and water with detergent to clean the street of urine. You are only allowed to walk in the direct area where you live and keep all contact either dog to dog or human to human to absolute minimum always respecting the 2m gap.

Although these regulations seem quite harsh,the police seem to be enforcing them with great vigour, so beware, fines on the horizon.

Coronavirus / covid-19 in Mallorca - update Tuesday 24th March 2020

Shopping in the Calviá area during the coronavirus outbreak.

So far despite some issues with uneeded panic buying earlier in the outbreak, in general shopping for food and essential supplies is no problem in the regions of Santa Ponsa, Palma Nova and the surrounding areas of Calviá and southwest Mallorca. Our advice is to shop strategically, where you can make use of smaller local shops as in our experience, these have excellent levels of supply and due to the lack of people in the area along with generally only admitting 3 people in the shop at a time, it makes for a Very stress free and successful shopping trip.

Coronavirus / covid-19 in Mallorca - update Monday 23rd March 2020

Yesterday Pedro Sánchez announced an extension for another 15 days to the total lockdown accross the whole of Spain, so Mallorca, Cavia and the surrounding areas of Santa Ponsa and the south west of Mallorca remain in total shutdown until April 11th.

Each night at 8pm, hundreds and thousands of locals head out on their terraces and balconies and clap and cheer to give thanks to the fantastic efforts of the emergency services in Mallorca, last night the services replied by driving through the desereted streets and sounding all of their sirens for about 20 minutes. Excellent work to the health services, fire, police and all other crucial services that are keeping our island safe.

Since my last update, the total number of infections across the whole of the Balearics has risen to 331 with a very sad 9 deaths associated to coronavirus. These latest statistics still places Mallorca in the very safest areas to be in Spain and with the total shutdown on flights and ports in place, we trust that the outbreak is well controlled on the island.

Coronavirus / covid-19 in Mallorca - update Friday March 20th 2020

We are nearing the end of the first week of lockdown, strangely enough the human spirit is resilient to change and in general everyone is getting into the groove of home isolation and movement controls.  The coronavirus numbers in Mallorca continue to rise very slowly, unfortunately we have suffered one more death, now a total of 3 since the start of the covid-19 outbreak in Mallorca.

The police continue to control all major junctions with new variations of the law mentioned today that if you do travel with 2 people in the car for valid reasons, you the passenger should sit in the rear of the vehicle to maintain distance.

One of our colleagues had to visit the urgencies depart of son espaces hospital in Palma yesterday (thankfully for nothing related to the virus) and gives public thanks to the staff of IB-SALUT, the balearic health service, for operating in the front line of the right against the virus.
