Lidl Santa Ponsa Construction Update: The Store is Taking Shape on Avenida Miguel Unamuno
Work on the new Lidl store on Avenida Miguel Unamuno in Santa Ponsa is progressing visibly and at pace. We covered the initial announcement and planning background in our original article on the Santa Ponsa transformation — and as of mid-May 2026, the site has moved well beyond groundworks and into a stage where the character of the finished building is already apparent from the street.
Our latest photograph, taken from Avenida Miguel Unamuno this week, shows the state of play on site right now.
What the Site Looks Like Now
The most significant development since our last update is that the main store structure is now clearly standing. The building's front elevation and its entrance canopy — the distinctive covered walkway that characterises Lidl's newer store format — is visible at the rear of the site, its clean white render already giving a strong indication of the finished appearance. This is no longer a building in its early stages; the shell is up and the external form of the store is defined.
In front of the building, the large area that will become the customer car park is currently a graded, levelled hardstanding under active groundwork. Machinery is on site and the surface preparation for the car park is clearly underway — drainage runs, sub-base laying and the groundwork that precedes final surfacing. The scale of the car park area is considerable relative to the surrounding streets, and when complete it will represent a meaningful addition to the parking available in this part of Santa Ponsa.
The site perimeter is secured with standard construction fencing running along the Avenida Miguel Unamuno frontage, and access to the road on that side remains open. The mature trees lining the avenue — the distinctive pale-barked eucalyptus that characterise this street — remain in place and continue to provide shade along the pavement. The surrounding residential buildings, including the recently completed apartment development directly adjacent to the east, are visible and give a clear sense of the store's immediate neighbourhood context.
What This Means for Santa Ponsa
The arrival of a full-size Lidl on Avenida Miguel Unamuno is the most significant addition to Santa Ponsa's retail infrastructure in recent years. Lidl's newer store format — larger floorplates, wider car parking, extended fresh food and bakery sections, and the expanded non-food range that has become a fixture of the brand's European stores — represents a step up from the smaller format convenience options currently available within the residential core of Santa Ponsa.
For residents and property owners in the immediate area, the practical benefit is straightforward: a full weekly supermarket shop, without the drive to Calvia town or the larger commercial zones further along the southwest coast, will be available within the neighbourhood. The car park being constructed alongside the store will also provide an overflow parking resource for the surrounding streets on busy summer days, which is a secondary but genuine benefit for the area.
Lidl operates 89 stores across the Balearic Islands and is one of the two largest supermarket operators in Spain by store count. The brand's expansion in Mallorca in recent years has followed the island's residential development patterns, with new stores typically opening in areas where residential density has increased significantly. Santa Ponsa's growth over the past decade — and in particular the new residential developments on and around Avenida Miguel Unamuno itself — places this location squarely within that pattern.
Timeline and Opening
No official opening date has been confirmed publicly by Lidl at the time of writing. Based on what is visible on site — a completed building shell with car park groundworks in progress — the store is in the later stages of construction. Internal fit-out, utilities connections, car park surfacing, signage and landscaping remain to be completed before any opening. We will continue to monitor progress and update this article when further confirmed information becomes available.
