Hospitals Near Santa Ponsa: Emergency and Specialist Care in Southwest Mallorca
The main public hospital for Santa Ponsa is Son Espases, the largest hospital in the Balearics, which covers Calvià and Andratx. Several private hospitals in Palma run 24-hour emergency departments for adults and children. In an emergency, call 112 or 061.
Healthcare is one of the first things families ask about when they look at homes with us, and it matters just as much to owners who are planning their later years here. The reassuring answer is that southwest Mallorca sits within easy reach of some of the best-equipped hospitals in Spain. Here is how the system is organised and where to go.
Son Espases: the Public Hospital for Calvià
The Balearic public health service, IB-Salut, divides Mallorca into hospital areas. The western area, known as Ponent, is served by the Hospital Universitari Son Espases on the northern edge of Palma, at Carretera de Valldemossa 79. Its catchment includes Calvià, Andratx, Puigpunyent, Esporles and Valldemossa, along with a large part of Palma, almost 340,000 people in total.
Son Espases opened in December 2010 and is the largest and most important public hospital in the Balearic Islands. Because it is by far the best equipped, the most complex cases from across the islands end up there, which also means residents of Calvià have the island's reference hospital as their local one. It has a dedicated children's emergency department.
Thinking about buying or selling in Mallorca?
From Santa Ponsa, the hospital is reached along the Ma-1 motorway towards Palma and then the Ma-20 ring road, a straightforward drive outside rush hour. The other large public hospital, Son Llàtzer, serves the east of Palma and the south of the island.
Private Hospitals With 24-Hour Emergency Departments
Alongside the public system, the two big private groups, Quirónsalud and Juaneda, provide emergency care. Several private hospitals in Palma run permanent emergency departments for adults and for children, including:
Hospital Quirónsalud Palmaplanas, at Camí de Jesús 40, on the western side of Palma and the closest of the large private hospitals to the southwest. It offers permanent general and paediatric emergency services.
Policlínica Miramar, at Camí de la Vileta 7, a reference centre in Balearic private healthcare since 1969, also with permanent general and paediatric emergency services. Hospital Juaneda Miramar is on the same road.
Clínica Rotger, at Via Roma 3 in central Palma, part of the Quirónsalud group, with permanent general and paediatric emergency services.
Closer to home, Quirónsalud also runs a clinic in Palmanova, within Calvià, which is useful for everyday consultations and minor problems.
Public or Private: How Most Residents Use Both
Many international residents in Calvià use both systems. Registered residents who contribute to Spanish Social Security, or who hold an S1 form as pensioners, are entitled to public healthcare through IB-Salut, including a family doctor at their local health centre and treatment at Son Espases. Our guide to registering with IB-Salut explains how to sign up, and our article on the S1 form covers retirees from the UK and the EU.
Others add private health insurance for faster access to specialists, a choice of hospital and English- or German-speaking doctors. Policies vary in which hospitals they include, so it is worth checking that your preferred emergency department is covered. Our guide to private health insurance in Mallorca sets out what foreign residents need.
Everyday Care in Calvià
For day-to-day needs, Calvià has its own public health centres, where registered residents are assigned a family doctor and, for children, a paediatrician. Pharmacies across Santa Ponsa, Nova Santa Ponsa and the neighbouring resorts operate a rota so that one is always open at night and on public holidays; the duty pharmacy is posted on every pharmacy door.
If you are moving with children, registering with a paediatrician soon after arrival makes everything easier later, from vaccinations to school health checks. For older residents, having both a local GP and a clear plan for which hospital you would use brings real peace of mind.
The Numbers to Know
In any emergency, call 112, the European emergency number, which operators answer in several languages. For medical emergencies in the Balearics you can also call 061, which connects directly to the medical emergency service and its ambulances. Keep your passport or residence card, your health card or insurance details and a list of any medication in an easy place at home.
Choosing a Home With Healthcare in Mind
For many of our buyers, especially those planning to spend more of the year here, being within reach of good hospitals is part of the decision. Santa Ponsa, Nova Santa Ponsa, Bendinat and Portals Nous all sit on the Ma-1 corridor towards Palma, which keeps the main hospitals within a short drive. For older owners thinking about a move to something smaller and more central, that proximity is often a deciding factor.
