Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra: The First Mandarin Oriental in Mallorca Opens in Calvià in July 2026
On 12 July 2026, Mandarin Oriental opens its first property in the Balearic Islands. Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra sits on the Punta Negra headland in Calvià — the same municipality as Santa Ponsa, Puerto Portals and Port Adriano — on one of the most historically admired stretches of coastline in the southwest.
For a brand that chooses its locations with care, the arrival in Calvià is a statement about where luxury hospitality is heading on the island. It is also the most significant new hotel opening in the southwest in years.

The Property
Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra occupies the headland site that was previously home to a well-regarded hotel of the same name, comprehensively renovated and repositioned under the Mandarin Oriental brand. The result is 131 rooms and suites, including 26 suites, 19 rooms and suites with private plunge pools, and three rooftop suites with full private pools overlooking the sea.
The design draws on local materials and craftsmanship — hand-placed stone throughout the property, soft neutral tones, natural materials — in a way that reads as distinctly Mallorcan rather than generically Mediterranean. The two private coves accessible exclusively to guests give it a seclusion that is difficult to find at this level elsewhere in the southwest.
The wellness offering is substantial: a spa with nine treatment rooms, two outdoor pools, an indoor pool, and a fitness centre. The position on the headland, surrounded by Aleppo pines with uninterrupted sea views, makes it one of the more dramatic hotel settings on the island.
Six Restaurants
The dining programme is what distinguishes Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra from most new hotel openings. Six venues, each with a distinct identity:
Matsuhisa Mallorca brings Nobu Matsuhisa's celebrated Nikkei concept — Japanese and Peruvian-influenced cuisine — to the island for the first time. Matsuhisa restaurants operate at a small number of Mandarin Oriental properties worldwide and the Mallorca edition marks the first appearance of the concept in the Balearics.
Leña, created by Spanish chef Dani García, is a contemporary steakhouse centred on open-fire cooking and locally sourced produce. García holds multiple Michelin stars across his restaurant group and Leña is one of his most acclaimed concepts.
The remaining four venues — Jacinta (Mexican), Leppoc (Mediterranean and Levantine), Sobretaula (alfresco tapas terrace) and Thalos (poolside bar) — cover a full range of dining moods from casual through to occasion dining. For a municipality that already had Puerto Portals and its established restaurant scene, the addition of Matsuhisa and Leña raises the overall dining standard of the southwest considerably.
Location and Access
Punta Negra is located between Portals Nous and Costa d'en Blanes, roughly 14 kilometres from Palma city centre and around 12 kilometres from Santa Ponsa by road. The drive from Santa Ponsa along the Ma-1 takes around 15 minutes. Puerto Portals marina is a few minutes further east.
The property is signposted from the main road. Valet parking is available at the hotel entrance. Reservations for the restaurants are made directly through the hotel at mandarinoriental.com.
What It Means for the Southwest
The Mandarin Oriental brand operates at the top tier of international luxury hospitality. Its presence in Calvià joins a short list of globally recognised names that now operate within the municipality. For the property market, the arrival of a brand at this level is consistently associated with increased international attention on a location and sustained price support at the upper end of the residential market.
