Golf Santa Ponsa I: The Course That Hosted the European Tour Seven Times
There are courses on Mallorca that are beautiful. There are courses that are convenient. Golf Santa Ponsa I is one of the few that has a genuine history — a championship pedigree earned over decades on the European Tour, with some of the most celebrated names in the game having competed here since the late 1980s.
It opened in 1977 as the first golf course in the municipality of Calvià and only the second on the entire island. Nearly fifty years later it remains the public course against which everything else in the southwest is measured.

The Design
Golf Santa Ponsa I was designed by Italian architect Folco Nardi, working alongside Spanish course designer Pepe Gancedo. The course covers 73 hectares of rolling Calvià countryside with views of Puig Galatzó — the 1,026-metre peak that defines the southwest skyline — as a constant backdrop.
The layout stretches 6,543 metres from the championship tees, par 72, with eleven lakes and forty-six bunkers distributed across 18 holes. The variety of trees throughout — olive, pine, almond — gives the course a distinctly Mallorcan character rather than the generic Mediterranean feel of some newer layouts on the island.
The 10th hole is the course's signature: a par 5 measuring 590 metres, making it one of the longest par 5s in Europe. From the tee, you're looking at a hole that demands strategy as much as power — a long, gentle dogleg with water threatening the approach. It's the kind of hole that stays with you.
The European Tour Years
Between 1988 and the late 1990s, Golf Santa Ponsa I hosted the European Tour on seven occasions. The tournament — run under several names including the Open de Baleares and the Mallorca Open — drew the best players of the era to the southwest of the island.
Severiano Ballesteros won here three times, in conditions that suited his imaginative game and willingness to attack. Bernard Langer competed here during his dominant years. José María Olazábal, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Ian Woosnam, Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood and Vijay Singh all played competitive rounds on these fairways. For a course in a small Mallorcan municipality, that is an extraordinary roster.
In 2021 the course returned to the European Tour spotlight when it hosted the Mallorca Golf Open — the first DP World Tour event in the Balearics since 2011. Denmark's Jeff Winther claimed his maiden European Tour title in a final round that confirmed the course's continued credentials at the highest level.
Playing the Course Today
Golf Santa Ponsa I is a public course — visitors are welcome on the No.1 layout on most days without a member introduction. Tee times can be booked directly through the club's website at golf-santaponsa.com.
The Santa Ponsa golf complex also includes two further courses — Golf Santa Ponsa II and III — which are private, reserved for members and their guests. These are shorter, more technical layouts that complement the championship course for members who want variety without the length of the main track.
Green fees on the No.1 course are competitive by European championship course standards. Early morning tee times in summer are the practical choice — the course faces west and southeast, and afternoon rounds in July and August can be demanding in the heat. From October through April, conditions are typically ideal and the course is rarely busy.
Getting There
The course is located on the Carrer Berenguer de Palou in Santa Ponsa, a short drive from the centre of the town. From the Santa Ponsa roundabout on the Ma-1, follow signs for Golf Santa Ponsa — the club is well signposted. There is parking at the clubhouse.
The surrounding area has a concentration of good golf: Real Golf de Bendinat is around 15 minutes east toward Palma, and the Arabella Golf courses at Son Vida are a 25-minute drive. The southwest represents one of the densest clusters of quality golf in the western Mediterranean.
