Es Firo, Soller: The Most Spectacular Festival You Have Probably Never Heard Of
There are festivals, and then there is Es Firo. Every year in the second week of May, the beautiful mountain town of Soller transforms into something entirely its own: a living, breathing, smoke-filled recreation of one of the most dramatic moments in the island's history. If you have not yet experienced it, the dates for 2026 are 7 to 11 May, and it is the kind of event that stays with you long after the gunpowder smoke has cleared.
This is not a folk fair with costumes and bunting. Es Firo is the full-throated, unapologetically noisy, genuinely moving re-enactment of the battle of 11 May 1561, when the people of Soller repelled an invasion of Algerian and Turkish pirates on the shores of what is now one of the most picturesque bays in the Mediterranean. Thousands gather at Port de Soller in the afternoon to watch enemy ships appear on the horizon. Cannon fire rings out. Smoke rolls across the beach. And the battle, fought by people in full period costume with swords and scimitars, moves from the port into the streets of the town and finally to the main square, the Placa Constitucio, where the defenders win and the Mallorcan anthem, La Balanguera, is sung by the entire crowd in a moment that is, frankly, breathtaking.
A Festival With Real Roots
What gives Es Firo its unusual power is that it commemorates something that actually happened. In May 1561, around 1,600 Algerian and Turkish corsairs landed at the Port de Soller with the intention of sacking the town and taking its people as slaves. What they had not counted on was the tenacity of the Sollerics, and in particular the women of the town, who have become legendary figures in the story. According to tradition, two sisters named Francisca and Catalina Casesnoves managed to kill pirates who were attacking their home, and the women of the Tamany district played a decisive role in driving the invaders back. Every year, two young women from Soller are honoured with the title of Valentes Dones, the Brave Women, in a ceremony that opens the celebrations.
The festival has been celebrated for over 120 years, and it remains one of the most deeply felt events in Mallorca's calendar. Unlike many heritage festivals that gradually become tourism products, Es Firo is still owned entirely by the people of Soller. The re-enactors are local families. The costumes are made with care and pride. The emotion in the main square at the end of the day is real.
How the Festival Unfolds: Day by Day
The 2026 festivities run from Thursday 7 May through to Monday 11 May, with each day bringing something distinct. On the Thursday evening, the investiture of the Valentes Dones takes place at the magnificent Sant Bartomeu Church on Soller's main square, a solemn and beautiful ceremony that sets the tone for everything that follows. On Saturday, a procession moves through the streets carrying the statue of the Mare de Deu de la Victoria, Our Lady of the Victory, and flowers are offered at the church. The Sant Ponc 1561 flag is hung, connecting the present to that pivotal spring more than four and a half centuries ago.
Sunday is Sa Fira, the fair, and it is wonderful in its own right. The streets around the Placa Constitucio are pedestrianised and filled with market stalls, farm animals, artisan products, people of all ages in traditional Mallorcan costume, food, wine, live music and dancing. If you have children, or simply love the feeling of a genuinely local event, Sa Fira is not to be missed.
Then Monday brings Es Firo itself. At three in the afternoon, church bells ring across Soller: enemy ships have been spotted. The farmers and defenders gather in the Placa dels Estiradors, Captain Angelats addresses his troops, and then the ancient tram, free on this day, takes the crowd down to Port de Soller for the first battle on Can Generos beach. The corsairs disembark and the fighting begins. The battle moves along Repic beach and then through the streets of the town, growing louder and more intense as it goes, until the final confrontation in the main square, where the pirates are defeated and driven off. The combination of fireworks, cannon shots, smoke and crowd noise is genuinely overwhelming in the best possible way. To watch the town drop to its knees and sing La Balanguera together, Moors and Christians side by side, is to feel something rare: a community absolutely alive to its own story.
Practical Information for Visitors
Soller is roughly 30 kilometres from Palma and accessible by car via the Ma-11 motorway, or, far more enjoyably, by the historic wooden train from Palma's Plaza de Espana station, which has been running since 1912 and passes through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery on the island. At Port de Soller, the vintage electric tram connects the town to the harbour and runs free of charge on the day of Es Firo itself.
Wristbands are required to enter the Placa Constitucio during the festival and are sold each Saturday in front of the town hall. It is worth noting that the combination of pyrotechnics, cannon fire and gunpowder makes Es Firo a very loud event, and it is not recommended for very young children or those sensitive to noise and smoke. Old clothing is also advisable: the atmosphere, and occasionally the participants, have a way of leaving their mark.
Hotels in the Soller valley fill quickly for this weekend, so anyone planning to attend should book accommodation well in advance. Port de Soller has an excellent range of restaurants and bars along its crescent-shaped waterfront, and the town itself has some of the best cafes and bakeries on the island. An early morning orange juice in the main square, followed by a ride on the tram and an afternoon of the most theatrical history lesson imaginable, is a genuinely perfect May day in Mallorca.

Como Se Desarrolla el Festival: Dia a Dia
Las festividades de 2026 se extienden del jueves 7 de mayo al lunes 11 de mayo, con cada dia ofreciendo algo distinto. El lunes llega el propio Es Firo. A las tres de la tarde, las campanas de la iglesia repican por toda Soller: se han avistado barcos enemigos. Los campesinos y defensores se reunen en la Placa dels Estiradors, el capitan Angelats arenga a sus tropas y despues el antiguo tranvia, gratuito ese dia, lleva a la multitud hasta Port de Soller para la primera batalla en la playa de Can Generos. Los corsarios desembarcan y comienza el combate. La batalla avanza por la playa de Repic y luego por las calles del pueblo, volviendose cada vez mas intensa, hasta el enfrentamiento final en la plaza principal, donde los piratas son derrotados y expulsados. La combinacion de fuegos artificiales, disparos de canon, humo y el ruido de la multitud es verdaderamente abrumadora, en el mejor sentido posible. Ver al pueblo entero arrodillarse y cantar La Balanguera juntos, moros y cristianos codo con codo, es sentir algo verdaderamente raro: una comunidad absolutamente viva en su propia historia.
Informacion Practica Para Visitantes
Soller se encuentra a unos 30 kilometros de Palma y es accesible en coche por la autovia Ma-11, o, de manera mucho mas agradable, en el historico tren de madera desde la estacion de Plaza de Espana de Palma, que lleva funcionando desde 1912 y atraviesa algunos de los paisajes de montana mas hermosos de la isla. En Port de Soller, el tranvia electrico vintage conecta el pueblo con el puerto y es gratuito el dia de Es Firo.
Se necesitan pulseras para acceder a la Placa Constitucio durante el festival, y se venden cada sabado frente al ayuntamiento. Cabe senalar que la combinacion de pirotecnia, disparos de canon y polvora convierte a Es Firo en un evento muy ruidoso, y no se recomienda para ninos muy pequenos ni para personas sensibles al ruido y al humo. Tambien se aconseja llevar ropa vieja: el ambiente, y en ocasiones los participantes, tiene la costumbre de dejar huella.

Soller liegt rund 30 Kilometer von Palma entfernt und ist per Auto ueber die Autobahn Ma-11 erreichbar, oder, weitaus reizvoller, mit dem historischen Holzzug vom Bahnhof Plaza de Espana in Palma, der seit 1912 verkehrt und durch einige der schoensten Berglandschaften der Insel fuehrt.
