Palma Christmas Lights 2026: The Switch-On Moves to Parc de la Mar
The Palma Christmas lights will be switched on on Saturday 21 November 2026 at the Parc de la Mar, the seafront park below the cathedral. It is the first time the city's official switch-on has been held there, and it comes with a large-scale show and a new Christmas market.
For anyone living in the southwest, the switch-on is one of those evenings that marks the change of season. The summer crowds have gone, the evenings are cooler, and Palma fills with families, music and a countdown that ends with the whole city lighting up at once. This year the backdrop is La Seu itself.
Date and Place
Palma town hall announced in September that the 2026 ceremony moves to the Parc de la Mar on Saturday 21 November. In previous years the switch-on has been held in Plaça d'Espanya, which hosted it for the first time in 2025, and before that in Plaça de la Reina and on the Passeig del Born. The town hall spokesperson, Mercedes Celeste, said the aim is to strengthen Palma's relationship with the sea.
The Majorca Daily Bulletin reported that the countdown takes place in the park and is followed by the Christmas lights being switched on across the city. The cathedral, lit up above the lake of the Parc de la Mar, provides the backdrop.
Thinking about buying or selling in Mallorca?
The move is also practical. The 2025 switch-on in Plaça d'Espanya drew around 15,000 people, and the Parc de la Mar has far more open space for a crowd of that size, with room to see the stage and the cathedral at the same time.
The Show
The town hall has budgeted 373,815 euros for the ceremony, which is planned as a large-scale show combining several artistic disciplines. According to the town hall, the theme is Palma's identity, with the sea and the city's heritage at the centre. The artists and the running order have not yet been announced.
The lighting itself is growing too. The city is extending its Christmas lights to more streets and neighbourhoods this year, so the effect of the switch-on reaches beyond the old town. The Born, Jaume III and the streets around the cathedral remain the classic places to walk once the lights are on.
Parc de Nadal: 46 Days of Christmas Market
The switch-on also opens the new Parc de Nadal, a Christmas market in the same park. It runs for 46 days, from 21 November to 6 January, with 60 stalls. The market is organised by the Palma retail associations Afedeco and Pimeco with the support of the town hall, as part of the city's "Palma, tot un centre de diversió" programme to bring people into the centre during the Christmas shopping season.
Having the market and the switch-on in the same place on the same night makes for an easy evening: arrive early, walk the stalls, find a good spot for the countdown, then stroll up into the lit streets afterwards for dinner.
Practical Tips
The start time for the ceremony has not yet been confirmed; the town hall publishes the full programme closer to the date, and Visit Palma lists city events. In past years the show has started in the early evening, after dark, so plan to be in the centre by late afternoon.
From Santa Ponsa, Peguera and the rest of Calvià, the easiest way in is by bus or taxi rather than by car. Car parks around the old town fill quickly on big event nights, and some streets close to traffic for the ceremony. TIB buses run from the southwest into Palma; check the winter timetable on the TIB website, especially for the return journey. Bring a jacket: the park is open to the sea breeze, and November evenings are fresh once the sun goes down.
Make a Day of It
The switch-on is a good excuse for a full day in Palma. Visit the cathedral in the afternoon, which you can plan through the official cathedral website, do some early Christmas shopping on the Born and Jaume III, then walk down to the Parc de la Mar for the market and the countdown. The cafés and restaurants of the old town are busy that night, so book dinner ahead.
For families with children, the market stalls and the countdown are the highlight; arriving early also means a better view of the stage.
Winter Life in Mallorca
Evenings like this are part of why so many families now live in Mallorca all year rather than just for the summer. From the southwest, Palma is close enough for a night out, while home stays quiet, green and near the sea.
